History of the Airedale
The Airedale Terrier is the largest breed of the terrier group, giving it the name, "King of Terriers". Oorang Airedales, also known as Mountain Airedales, were first established around the 1920s by Walter Lingo. These larger Oorang Airedales, usually weighing 75-100+ pounds, were developed specifically for hunting. Airedales are a working breed and are happiest when the have a job to do for or with their owner. Airedales have previously been used in World War I, by law enforcement, for home protection, search and rescue and independently hunting large game.
Characteristics of the Airedale
Airedale Terriers are loyal courageous companions. They have wonderful dispositions and are easily trained. Airedales are very intelligent, strong-minded, stoic and can sometimes be stubborn. They require much exercise, ample space to run and a fence. Airedales have been bred to hunt. They also exhibit herding characteristics. If all parties are trained correctly, Airedales are excellent with children, cats and other small animals.
Training your Airedale
Airedales are relatively easy to train. We, at Aubert's Airedales, recommend crate training your pup. All of our dogs have been crate trained. It establishes the foundation of the home. Your dog will learn to respect it's home, then he will learn to respect yours! Airedales require extensive amounts of positive reinforcement. They have an excellent memory and do not forget things, especially frightening or startling experiences. Some things they do forget but with a little bit of reminding your Airedale will learn quickly.
Our Airedales are very large animals, with tons of strength and motivation! We strongly encourage everyone to partake in obedience training with your puppy. We feel it is best you take your puppy to courses and learn how to work together. Airedales can go in a variety of directions as far as training; obedience, agility, schutzhund, military/police or basic home protection. We encourage you to pursue a working career for your pup, if that is up your alley, BUT of course under the training of a professional.
As an Airedale owner, one should possess much patience and humor. These pups have a long puppy hood, lasting up to about 2 and 1/2 years old. During this time, your puppy is growing. He needs exercise, good food and lots of love. This is the time to bond with your puppy.
